Desert SUV Trip (Nevada)

(Note: This is an opportunity for folks to learn -- about mining, ranching, nature, and each other. For those ranchers receiving this, it is a chance to help educate folks and learn, too. For the recreationists receiving this, it is a way to learn more about ranching and mining, and their vital need to us all -- as well as their continuation as viable economic means of private enterprise in these rural lands! Multiple use is what we advocate, and access to these lands that we love. Let's make the most of this opportunity!)

SUV/4WD OWNERS INVITED TO EXPLORE SOME OF NORTHERN NEVADA'S FORGOTTEN PAST

Desert 4-Wheeling, Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21 - All applications must be received before September 15

Cold Springs, Nevada - Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and other four-wheel drive owners are invited to participate in a two-day historical and scenic trek through northern Nevada's beautiful Desatoya Mountain Range and the short-lived Wonder Mining District, Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21.

Hosted by the Placerville-based Flat Fenders Jeep Club, this fully-narrated tour will begin at the Cold Springs Station Resort, located approximately 50 miles east of Fallon on Highway 50. The tour will commence after breakfast on Saturday morning.

According to Oly Olson, one of the tour organizers from the Flat Fender Jeep Club, the trip will require some mild four-wheeling and it has been designed especially for families.

"People generally think of Nevada as being pretty flat and full of sage brush," said Olson, "but the truth is, the state and this particular region offers some majestic mountain ranges and many significant points of interest that date back to early emigrants heading West and mining districts that were producing precious metals and copper for several years."

Olson explained that tour participants would tour old Pony Express and early stagecoach routes near the Destoya Mountain Range on Saturday and tour the old Wonder Mining District and a working cattle ranch on Sunday.

The Destoya Mountain Range, he said, is very rugged with many peaks and ridges rising over 9,000 feet. Deeply cut canyons on the west side of the range contain fascinating rock formations and riparian ecological communities. A camera is a must, Olson said, as visitors are apt to see a mule deer, gray fox, sage grouse, red-tailed hawk or even a golden eagle.

Cost for the trip is $150 for adults, which includes all meals from Saturday breakfast through lunch on Sunday. Cost for children 12 and under is $75. All applications must be received before Sept. 15.

Olson said that the Cold Springs Station offer RV parking for $10 per night with full hookups and tent camping for $5 per night. The resort offers hot showers and also provides gasoline, mini-mart service, and a restaurant and full bar.
