U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH) and U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-OH) today announced that Congress has approved $1 million for the Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor for fiscal year 2004.

The 70-mile corridor stretches through the counties of Tuscarawas, Stark, Summit and Cuyahoga.

The funds were approved as part of the 2004 Interior Appropriations Bill conference report which was agreed to by the Senate.

The bill now goes to the President for his signature.

"This historic corridor brought life and commerce to Northeast Ohio and must be preserved," said Senator DeWine.

"As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have had a part in securing funds to the area for this important project."

"The canal era is a part of our nation's history that is unique to Ohio. It was a brief time in the mid-1800s between the decline of long-distance wagon transport and the rise of the railroad when a new, elaborate infrastructure system developed, along with its own culture of bargemen and canal workers. The Ohio and Erie Canal corridor is an excellent education and tourism resource and I'm glad to help preserve it with these funds," said Voinovich.

The funds will be used to maintain the canal, build walking trails, preserve historic buildings and develop visitor centers.
