October 24, 2003 Montana Cattlemen's Association - With a "Steak" In Montana's Future Contact Ashlea A. Redding 406-259-5433 Billings, Montana - The second annual Cattlemen's Day, hosted by the Montana Cattlemen's Association (MCA) and R-CALF United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) has been scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Holiday Inn Grand Montana in Billings. This year's event will offer to attendees a multitude of information affecting today's cattle industry. In addition to hearing MCA and R-CALF USA updates and taking part in MCA's annual meeting, the group will also hear from Mike Callicrate, Michael Stumo, Ralph Peck, William Hughes, John Wheaton, Rich Ellerd and Professor Ulrich Kihm. Mike Callicrate is known for speaking out against the consolidation of the packing, processing and retail segments of the beef industry, and the devastating effects of captive supply. He is a plaintiff in the landmark antitrust case against Tyson/IBP. Michael Stumo, a managing member of the law firm of Stumo & Milleron in Winsted, Connecticut, is also the general counsel for the Organization for Competitive Markets which focuses on competition policy in agriculture. He has edited the policy book entitled 'A Food and Agricultural Policy for the 21st Century' and has co-authored several articles regarding competition and fairness policy in agriculture. Luncheon Speaker Ralph Peck is Director of the Montana Department of Agriculture. He serves as a board member of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and is past President of the Western Association of State Departments of Agriculture. He is also past President of the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association and is past Chairman of the U.S./Canada Trade Accord working group and has accepted Chairmanship again for 2003\2004. William Hughes is an attorney for the National Association of Federal Veterinarians. In addition to representing individual members with work related problems, he has dealt extensively with several federal agencies, primarily the Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of USDA. John Wheaton works as a hydrogeologist on energy development issues in southeastern Montana. He has been a research hydrogeologist for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology for the past 15 years, where his research emphasis has included water resource assessments, coal mine impacts to hydrogeologic systems, mine reclamation issues and coalbed methane. Rich Ellerd represents the Livestock Marketing Association in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. He will be addressing Livestock Risk Protection Insurance. Cattlemen's Day key note speaker is Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Ulrich Kihm of Bern, Switzerland. Professor Kihm is the CEO of SAFOSO Switzerland, Safe Food Solutions Inc. a consulting company providing professional services in all aspects of food safety on a global level. For the past 10 years he has been the Chief Veterinary Officer of Switzerland, working to control BSE among other important diseases. He also teaches Veterinary Public Health at the Veterinary Faculty of the University Of Bern, Switzerland. Other convention highlights include a tradeshow, silent auction, ranch photography contest and entertainment by Montana's own Ringling 5.
