Issue: Domestic terrorists -- under the guise of animal rights extremists -- are becoming more active. Some of their most recent actions: an arson fire of an apartment complex under construction in San Diego doing $50 million in damage; damage to over 100 vehicles worth $2.5 million in suburban Los Angeles; set off two bombs near the headquarters of a bio-medical research firm near San Francisco; released 10,000 minks from a mink farm in Washington State and vandalized a restaurant in Sonoma, California, for serving foie gras -- a delicacy made from goose liver.

Building construction sites, car dealerships, bio-medical other research labs, and mink farms have all been targets by either Animal Liberation Front (ALF) or Earth Liberation Front (ELF) for the last seven years.

The terrorists are protesting various issues ‹ urban development, SUVs, genetically modified foods, medical testing on animals, killing geese for making foie gras, and raising animals in controlled situations -- but their main goal is to destroy the American way of life.

To date no one has been injured but e-mails from the groups warn of escalating attacks.

An e-mail sent to Bite Back magazine by ALF warns Chiron Corporation, a biomedical research company, "This is the endgame for the animal killers and if you choose to stand with them you will be dealt with accordingly. There will be no quarter given, no more half measures taken."

Comment 1: I encourage the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to treat these terrorists as seriously as they treat al Qaeda members. They are no different in wanting to destroy American society.

Comment 2: It is time for legislation which would provide for stricter sentences for domestic terrorists who aim to destroy our way of life.

Background and links:

ALF and ELF have been active in the U.S. for nearly seven years. The FBI believes that the two organizations have committed more than 600 acts of terrorism and caused about $43,000,000 in damage.

One of the most widely known acts of ELF was the fire set to the Vail Mountain Ski Resort in 1999, a conflagration that caused $12 million in damage.

ELF¹s website is no longer accessible but ALF's website is

where they list previous 'actions.'

According to various news reports, the FBI has opened investigations into some of the attacks mentioned above. It may be due to these investigations that ELF¹s website is currently down.
