| Baykeeper trashes fish farm
practices
(Note from MI: To make a long story short this is part of the riverkeeper/baykeeper regime that Robert Kennedy, Jr., is involved in. I have no doubt that the baykeeper was started for the sole purpose to harass and destroy the aquaculture industry in this area. The facts are that those living and working in the Bay Of Fundy say this is a lie!) June 13, 2003 Canadian Broadcasting Company New Brunswick, Canada To submit a Letter to the Editor: tjletters@nbpub.com Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada - The New Brunswick Conservation Council's Fundy Baykeeper says litter and debris from salmon farms is creating a serious pollution problem along the Bay of Fundy coast. Baykeeper David Thompson showed up at the annual Aquaculture Fair in St. Andrews this morning with a pick-up truck loaded with garbage he collected on the beaches. There were plastic feed bags, ropes, nets and pieces of salmon cage. Thompson says in some cases, entire cages weighing tonnes have been dumped on the shoreline. He says it's time that the salmon-farming industry do more. "We're asking today that the aquaculture industry take responsiblity for this, that they take responsibility for these old cages which are hauled up at these different locations, and that there are better management practices in place at the sites." Nell Halse of the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association says they have been working with locals groups to clean up the shorelines. One of those groups is Eastern Charlotte Waterways. Sue Farquason, Waterways executive director, says the problem has improved immensely in the last five or six years. "Five or six years ago, on every shoreline you would have found styrofoam, bait, bags, feed totes, that sort of thing. Now, sure you can find them out there but nowhere near to the extent that you used to." Farquason saws now companies commit to cleaning up certain beaches regularly, even taking away the heavy cages. http://nb.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=nb_salmonlitter20030613 |
