Saturday afternoon, the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office was notified by Representative Kretz that some had shot one of his horses in the front pasture by his house. Kretz said he believed it happened either late Friday night or early Saturday morning while he was home, however, Kretz said he did not hear the shot. Sheriff Frank Rogers said the investigation showed that the horse had been shot in the hindquarter. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife also came to the scene and used a metal detector to locate the bullet in the animal. Rogers said the Wildlife Agent stated that from looking at the area he felt that this was most likely a deliberate act. Kretz said his front gate was locked which meant whoever did this had to hike in about three miles to get where they could shoot the animal. The only open hunting season in the area around Kretz’s home is for bear, and officials say it is “unlikely the horse was mistaken for a game animal.” The horse was in a corral right next to the Kretz home. The Okanogan County Sheriff's Office is continuing to work on the investigation to try and determine why someone would have killed the animal. Representative Kretz's Office in Olympia has been contacted about the incident. Rogers said, “It should be noted that this is not the first incident Representative Kretz has had on his property.” He said, “Last year someone destroyed the sign to his property and actually went to a lot of work to destroy it.”
