Wildfire season
closes after near-record number of
acres burned
(Note: It is interesting that all the private land that burned is
not counted. Also of interest is the FACT that the National Fire
News http://www.nifc.gov/fireinfo/nfn.html shows
8,221,095 acres burned in 2005, while "only" 6,911,415
acres were incinerated in 2000 and 7,814,151 up in smoke in 2004. So
... how can this be the "most" since the "record
year" of 2000, when it is, in FACT, the WORST year? Call the National
Interagency Fire Center External Affairs Office in Boise, Idaho, and
ask them why the discrepancy! 208-387-5457 MST or email NIFC_Comments@nifc.blm.gov)

Boise, Idaho - The nation's 2005 wildfire season saw more than 8.2 million acres of state and federal land burned. It was the most since the record year of 2000 and nearly double an average fire year.Terry Marsha with the U.S. Department of Interior says much of that burning was in grass and rangeland instead of timber.
The season-ending National Wildland Fire Outlook report was issued yesterday by state and federal fire forecasters. The report covers wildfire activity on state and federal land across the United States, though most of the burning occurs in the western U.S. and Alaska.
