County pitches anti-Minuteman resolution

(Note: This resolution wording is classic Language Deception. The Minuteman Project is a group of unarmed volunteers who simply report those who engage in illegal entry into the United States of America to the Border Patrol. Ask yourself, dear reader, why "city leaders" and county commissioners would use Hurricane Katrina to vilify such good people.)

Cameron County Commissioners are expected to vote today on a resolution opposing the establishment of the Texas Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. and any affiliated group in the county.

The Minuteman project is a volunteer group aimed at curbing illegal immigration on the Texas border. The group announced last month that 50 of its members were moving in to the Brownsville area this month to begin implementing their “Save Our Borders” program of border vigilance.

The group moved up its original October 1 start date in response, group leaders said, to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents being moved off the border to assist with hurricane relief efforts in other states.

A portion of the proposed county resolution reads: “The Minutemen group has seized on the humanitarian efforts of federal law enforcement officers to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina to interject itself into local law enforcement issues in Cameron County and no police or civilian authority in Cameron County has requested the presence of the Minutemen, whose unwelcome presence threatens Cameron County residents with an atmosphere of intimidation and disorder.”

The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in Commissioner’s Court on the fourth floor of the Cameron County Courthouse, 964 E. Harrison Street.

El Paso city leaders have adopted a similar resolution.

A Brownsville Herald poll of city commissioners indicated a majority would support such a measure.
