U.S. Agricultural Losses Valued at $944 Million Due to Wildlife Damage

Crop and livestock losses from wildlife in the United States totaled $944
million during 2001.  Field crop losses to wildlife totaled $619 million,
livestock and poultry losses totaled $178 million, and losses of vegetables,
fruits and nuts totaled $146 million.  These losses include destruction of or
damage to crops in the field and death or injury to livestock caused by
wildlife.

Major wildlife species causing damage and the percentage of occurrence
reported is also highlighted in the following table.  Individuals were allowed
to report more than one species, if applicable.  Occurrence of wildlife
species reported causing damage should not be used to derive dollar loss by
species.

A random sample of U.S. producers was surveyed to provide data for these
estimates.  Survey procedures ensured that all crop and livestock producers,
regardless of size, had a chance to be included in the survey.  About 12,000
operators were contacted during February and March by telephone interview.
Estimates are subject to sampling and non-sampling errors.  Non-sampling error
was minimized through rigid quality control in the data collection process and
a careful review of reported data for consistency and reasonableness.

This report is released as a cooperative effort between the National
Agricultural Statistics Service and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
- Wildlife Services.
