Rochester, New York (FBW) - The Regional Center for Independent Living in Rochester, New York, hosted a June 4 ribbon tying and dedication ceremony to show support and bring awareness to the controversial struggle to preserve Terri Schiavo's right to live.

Schiavo is the 40-year-old Clearwater woman who collapsed 14 years ago and is in the center of an international debate over the so-called “right to die.”

Todd Eggert, RCIL’s Executive Director, introduced Terri’s uncle, Michael “Uncle Mike” Tammaro, who spoke of the struggle that their family has endured and of how much the out pouring of public support has meant to them all.

After speaking, Tammaro and his wife, accompanied by their children and grandchildren, assisted in tying a green ribbon around the tree in front of RCIL’s East Avenue, Rochester, location.

Eggert said is the center’s intention to keep the green ribbon, symbolizing life, on display until Terri is home safe with her family.

The event was well attended by members of the public who all received a green tartan lapel ribbons to wear; green symbolizing life and the plaid to symbolize diversity, a main theme in disability awareness. RCIL is committed to continue their support of the Life Ribbon campaign by making and distributing the lapel ribbons for interested supporters of Terri Schiavo’s right to live.
