Humanities: Will to Live

It is an unbelievable testament to the fortitude of the American people -- in what they will do when they believe in something so much -- that they would go to such extraordinary measures and efforts to save the life of a person who is not a family member. But aren't we all part of the greater family, a member of a society that is mandated by the laws we accept and bind ourselves to obey, that NO ONE shall be intentionally caused to die?

In the four years that I have been following this situation -- watching reported news, sitting in the Clerk of the Court records division reading the ever-growing 33 volumes of the guardianship file of Theresa Marie Schiavo, and attending a hundred court hearings -- this has got to be the boldest attempt to stop the continuous denial of this disabled woman's statutorily guaranteed retained rights.

My own continuous attempts have met with similar "documented" results in complaint reporting, always followed by endless runaround and hearing the same prepared "talking points", the all too familiar "pat statements", seemingly being given to various agencies and law enforcement.

When this author interviewed Mr. Schoch, he said, "I am no longer waiting for the state and the governor to do the jobs that the laws of this state mandate they do."

When I asked him what he thought he would accomplish -- being just one person against the giant government -- his pointed reply was, "These supposed good men and women, whom we the public have entrusted with protecting us from terrorists and criminals, are enabling and participating in an effort to turn all of Florida into a state that legally causes people to die."

He states that the effort to end Terri Schiavo's life is as the Governor's attorney Ken Connor characterizes -- that she did not say anything concerning taking action that would 'Make Me Dead'.

The Bigger Agenda

What Drives The Support and Fight?

While in the beginning, this Orlando advocate for Terri Schiavo was skeptical of claims made by the kin family of Mrs. Schiavo, and was constantly digging into the details and surrounding reasons of the entire 14+ years she has remained in the condition she is in, the results of which he says leave him with no other choices.

Juan Schoch is really no different than many others I have interviewed, when it comes to asking how he comes to find himself doing this, and directing so much of his life and time in trying to save Terri Schiavo from a fate she left no written suicide note for others to act upon.

The common thread is that people seem to *feel* that they have in some way been inspired or even "called" to help in ways they can -- that the facts they have come to know, through all the various means they receive them, leave them with a feeling or a 'confidence' that something is terribly wrong.

In fact, Juan is quick to commend the efforts of thousands across the country whose support of Terri Schiavo and whose efforts to stop her forced death have never waned. As he puts it, "They 'get it.' They are people who are actually trying to do something to help. I hope that people continue to join in, wherever they may be on this planet, to put a stop to anyone who advocates or helps to try and legalize euthanasia."

The Winner

As to who will be the winner of the bid, the bid to save Terri Schiavo from the element that some have characterized as 'The Merchants of Death', just ask around.

The whole planet is filled with people who hope that it will be Theresa Marie Schiavo, on the road to her recovery.
