ARCADIS
Awarded Contract to Provide Mitigation for 70-acre Wetland
(Note: Language deception -- which contradicts the Corps of
Engineers' 'restoration' mission -- is thick in this article, from
"creation" to "enhancement" to "habitat
protection" in an area that has just been created. The ratio of
created "habitat" -- complete with a PERMANENT
conservation easement -- to original "impacted" and
"lost" wetlands is 3.4-to-1, which is reminiscent of
stories of the Mafia and the extortion used in order for businesses
to be "protected".)
October 27, 2004
Denver, Colorado (BUSINESS WIRE) - ARCADIS (NASDAQ:ARCAF)(EURONEXT:
ARCAD) announced today that it was selected as the prime contractor
by the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) to provide professional
engineering and construction services to complete the $1.8 million
Bayport wetland mitigation project.
The Bayport mitigation project will mitigate nearly 70 acres for
wetlands and coastal prairie impacted during the construction of the
Bayport Terminal Complex located in Houston, Texas.
Following a competitive request for qualifications for design/build services, ARCADIS was selected to manage the project along with service partner, Remedial Construction, and small business team members Berg Miller and TSC Engineering.
The mitigation project is designed to offset the loss of
approximately 20 acres of wetlands within the Bayport project
footprint.
Mitigation design, construction and monitoring efforts will
take place in a memorial tract of land adjacent to the Armand Bayou
Nature Center in Pasadena, Texas.
With a mitigation ratio of 3.4-to-1, the newly
constructed wetland area will result in wetland and coastal
prairie creation and enhancement programs, and
wetland and upland habitat protection under a permanent
conservation easement.
"ARCADIS is both excited and honored to have been awarded this design/build project. The confidence that the Port of Houston Authority has in the ARCADIS team to execute this sensitive work on a tight schedule is a privilege. We are confident that our collective skills will deliver a top quality product in an efficient manner and meet the needs of all interested parties," said Gilbert Long, project manager for ARCADIS. To serve the needs outlined by PHA, which is operating under a construction permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ARCADIS must successfully design, implement and monitor, for a term of no less than six years, the ecological characteristics vital to the project's success. This includes wetland enhancement, coastal prairie enhancement and habitat protection. The project will be considered both a success and complete when wetland hydrology criteria and percent cover of desirable vegetation and control of undesirable vegetation reach acceptable quantifiable targets. About Port of Houston Authority The PHA owns and operates the public facilities located along the Port of Houston, the 25-mile long complex of diversified public and private facilities designed for handling general cargo, containers, grain and other dry bulk materials, project and heavy lift cargo, and other types of cargo. Each year, more than 6,600 vessels call at the port, which ranks first in the U.S. in foreign waterborne tonnage, second in overall total tonnage, and sixth largest in the world. The Port Authority plays a vital role in ensuring navigational safety along the Houston Ship Channel, which has been instrumental in Houston's development as a center of international trade. Just one of several Arcadis global news headlines, all rife with
language deception (note the addition of the extra deceiving word
"natural" when referring to Hungary's water, as though
there could be "unnatural" water -- and continuing the
charade of purporting to "protect" the water of an entire
country, when the real intent is to CONTROL -- "manage" --
that country's entire resource. How lovely. Arcadis is also busy in
America -- notably Florida, among other states -- and and other
countries, such as Poland. Please take the time to read the others
that are "bolded".
Arcadis supports Hungary in Nationwide Ecological Water

(Note: "Ecological" Water Survey -- how will that
"support" Hungary? Business is business, and this
"survey" supports the bottom line of this global, $1
Billion per year in revenues company. ARCADIS is supporting ARCADIS,
and you can bank on it. ARCADIS certainly is! We're
talking about every drop of water in this country. Which countries
are next in the global control agenda of ALL the world's water? Look
closely in your own neighborhood to see how the EPA is looking at
YOUR water.)
November 4, 2002
Arnhem, the Netherlands - ARCADIS (NASDAQ: ARCAF, EURONEXT: ARCAD),
the international consultancy and engineering company, has been
awarded a contract by the Hungarian Ministry of Environment and
Water to conduct an ecological survey of all surface waters
in Hungary and the formulation of a nation-wide monitoring program
in order to assist Hungary's accession to the EU by contributing to
the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. The
contract, to the value of Eu1 million, was awarded to the international
consortium of ARCADIS, Mott Macdonald (U.K.) and the Danish
Hydrological Institute.
According to Water Framework Directive (WFD), which
came into force in December 2000, good surface water status
has to be reached before the end of year 2015 in all EU member
states, including Hungary. Biological quality is the major
objective of the WFD. The Water Framework Directive establishes a
new framework for the management and protection of
Hungary's natural waters -- its rivers, lakes and
groundwater.
Mrs. Zs. Steindl, the project leader of the Ministry of Environment
and Water, indicates the relevance and significance of this project
to the people of Hungary. "The trans-boundary character
of the Hungarian surface waters imposes additional
demands on designing an appropriate biological monitoring and
assessment system. Hungary still has to step up its efforts
to meet the WFD requirements for biological monitoring and
assessment, but it lacks methodological guidance and experience
in various sampling- and assessment techniques. Many waters have
not yet been sampled for biological quality elements. This is the
first survey in the EU on a nation-wide scale in which the
WFD's biological monitoring requirements will be implemented.
The outcomes of the project will therefore be of major interest to
other member states as well".
Michiel Jaski, member of the Executive Board of ARCADIS, stated,
"This assignment confirms the strong position that
ARCADIS has in water management. It continues the
extensive work previously performed in the region by ARCADIS. This
assignment will build upon the considerable track record of ARCADIS
with implementation of the Water Frame
Directive. This new Directive provides a robust
consultancy market for companies such as ARCADIS".

Environmental issues center of Inland Northwest Research Alliance 4th Annual Symposium"We understand the issues and what needs to be done, even if our leaders do not." - Bruce Babbitt, frmr. Sec'y. of Interior, September 20, 2004. September 21, 2004 Contact: Kathleen Cosgrove The former Secretary of Interior, Bruce Babbitt, addressed the importance of science and how it relates to politics within the Pacific Northwest and the U.S., during the opening session of the fourth annual Inland Northwest Research Alliance Environmental and Subsurface Science Symposium in Spokane, WA. "We understand the issues and what needs to be done, even if our leaders do not," said Babbitt, referring to the environment and the government's position on such things as climate change, the greenhouse effect and the important relationship between ground water and surface water. The fourth annual symposium highlighted natural resource issues that are part of every day debates in the Pacific Northwest. Other topics included national and international research conducted in the areas of environmental science and subsurface science as they relate to the areas of energy, nuclear and national security technologies. The symposium gave the students and policy makers in attendance a forum for discussing research while providing valuable networking possibilities. Education and the importance of various courses and disciplines within environmental and subsurface science and what students should focus on to meet tomorrow's business needs was the focus of Evan Nyer's presentation entitled, Five Small Steps for Hydrogeologists to Take Over the World (of Remediation). Nyer, a leading hydrogeologist and senior vice-president of ARCADIS G & M, Tampa, FL., has developed strategies, technical designs and led the installation of more than 400 groundwater and soil remediation systems across the U.S. Dr. James Tate, Jr., the current senior science advisor for Secretary of Interior Gale Norton, outlined the current administration's mission for the department. He stressed while science is at the foundation of the Interior Department's strategic plan, other factors such as traditional ecological knowledge, public desire, laws and regulations also play a factor. He encouraged the graduate students in the audience -- working to become future scientists -- to keep abreast with the latest issues regarding a number of different Interior Department opportunities. The level of research being conducted and presented at the symposium provides an excellent mix of science professionals and government agencies working toward furthering the environmental agenda relating to energy, nuclear and national security issues.
